What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks are lines or stripes that develop on the skin after it is rapidly stretched. They are usually red in colour, turning silvery as time progresses and as fat layers form below the surface. They most commonly occur around puberty or due to rapid weight gain or in pregnancy, and you’ll mostly notice them around the stomach, thighs, breasts, arms and back.

Stretch marks are a type of scarring caused when the connective tissue in the middle dermis layer of the skin is stretched beyond its capable limits of elasticity. Once stretched, the skin lacks collagen and is unable to fully recover. There are three key layers of the skin…
